Meet the lab
Alec A. Schmaier, MD PhD
PI
Dr. Schmaier is a practicing cardiologist and vascular medicine specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. He obtained his MD/PhD studying platelet biology with Dr. Mark Kahn at the University of Pennsylvania. He performed postdoctoral work with Drs. Samir Parikh and Robert Flaumenhaft at BIDMC studying vascular biology and coagulation. He enjoys coffee, has the stereo on, and wishes he were a better tennis player.
Allison Gabbert, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
A native Californian, Dr. Gabbert earned her PhD from the UC Santa Barbara studying collective cell migration under Dr. Denise Montell. She is fascinated by cell behaviors and how these change in disease contexts. She also loves to take pretty pictures and movies of cells through microscopy. Dr. Gabbert plans on pursuing a career in therapeutics research. She loves to play board games and video games, explore new places, and curl up on the couch with a plate of cookies, her two cats, and a fun fantasy novel.
Kobe Tray, BA
Research Assistant
From Chesire, CT, Kobe recently graduated from Williams College with a BA in Economics. At Williams, he was captain of the swim and dive team and earned D3 All-American status in springboard. He plans to pursue a career in medicine. Outside the lab, he is a passionate, albeit amateur, fly fisherman, trying to figure out how to fish in the Boston area.
Ivan Aivasovsky, MD
Postdoctoral Fellow
Dr. Aivasovsky is from Venezuela and received his MD and minor in public health in Bogota, Colombia. His current research is focused on mouse models of endothelial dysfunction and thrombosis. Dr. Aivasovsky plans to pursue a career in Cardiology. He loves cooking for family and friends, Laser-sailing, long-distance running, and always has music on.
Ron Mitra, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
Originally from California, Dr. Mitra received his PhD in Chemical Engineering at Northeastern University with Dr. Eno Ebong developing preventive therapies for atherosclerosis targeting the glycocalyx to reverse endothelial dysfunction. Dr. Mitra plans on pursuing a career in cardiovascular medicine. Outside of research, he loves watching and playing sports, including soccer and basketball, finding the top breweries in the NE area, and spending time with friends and family.
Henry Ma
Undergraduate Intern
Henry is an undergraduate at Harvard College and hails from Easton, MA. He intends to concentrate in Molecular and Cellular Biology because of its expansive room for exploration and relevance to healthcare. In his free time, he enjoys making/appreciating music, taking photos on nature walks, and playing video games

Papa F. Anderson, BA
Research Assistant
Papa graduated from Williams college with honors in Chemistry. Papa is interested in how medical research and education can advance healthcare in developing countries. Outside of lab, he likes to shadow box, take long walks and bike rides, watch and play soccer, and read.

Siyu Chen, MS
Research Assistant
Siyu graduated from Fudan University and received a Masters in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Brandeis University. She is an accomplished concert violinist and interested in creative writing.

Meera Narayanan-Pandit, BA
Undergraduate Intern
An environmental studies major and chemistry minor at Connecticut College, Meera received a scholarship to support two summers in lab. Meera has a strong interest in public health to address racial disparities in cardiovascular disease and plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Kelsey Sack, MD PhD
Medical Resident
Dr. Sack worked in the lab during residency and was selected to present her work at Internal Medicine Grand Rounds. She received her MD/PhD from Boston University and Residency and Fellowship in Pulmonary, Critical Care at BIDMC.
Currently: postdoctoral fellow, Flaumenhaft Lab
Milan Kaushik, MD
Medical Resident
Hailing from Michigan, Dr. Kaushik is an Internal Medicine resident at BIDMC. He received his MD from Wayne State University and was a Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Fellow. In his spare time, he can be found playing bullet chess and enjoys baking.
